Cruizin’s 10th Anniversary Car Show

“Overall I am very satisfied with the numbers for LICruizin 2015,” stated Sandy Kane, Cruizin’ Chair. “We have matured over the past ten years into one of the leading car show/events on Long Island. We are a leading voice on Long Island in Prostate Cancer awareness and the need for men to have an annual PSA screening test. We provide a large number of free PSA tests at our annual shows. This testing has saved the lives of more than 125 men since 2006 and will continue to do so. That is what this is all about – saving lives!”

PROSTATE CANCER

Thank you from the Chair

Having just finished our ninth year of Long Island Cruizin’ I want to thank everyone who has helped to make this one of the most well attended events on Long Island. From our first show on the grass at Fireman’s Field in Merrick in 2006 with 100 exhibitor cars and 65 PSA tests administered (1 elevated level returned) to our 2014 event (we are no longer just a show!) with 780 preregistered and day of event exhibitor cars, 3700 paid visitors, 502 PSA tests administered (36 elevated levels returned) and $20K donated for Prostate Cancer research ($70K in the past three years), we have come a long way.

WE COULD NOT HAVE DONE IT WITHOUT ALL OF YOU – our car exhibitors, our vendors, our sponsors, our walk-in guests and our volunteers.

2014 Car Show Breaks Records

On September 14, 2014 the 9th Annual L.I. Cruizin for A Cure Car Show took over the parking lot of the Sears Auto Center on Broadway in Hicksville, NY. and broke all previous records.

A beautiful September day where a record number of attendees checked out a record number of cars on display.
A beautiful September day where a record number of attendees checked out a record number of cars on display.

After a heavy rain weather event the night before the day of the show dawned with  beautiful late summer sunshine, cooler temperatures and a brilliant blue sky.  The parking area reached capacity very early in the day and some late arrivals were asked to wait for spots to become available.

Cars and trucks of every make, model and year streamed through the gates, each distinctly different from the other, but equally polished and sparkling in the sun. A large cadre of volunteers, many of them prostate cancer survivors themselves, handled all the logistics and managed to many aspects of the event in stride.

The shows’ entire purpose is to reach out to vulnerable male population by offering free PSA tests at the predominately male focused event and raise funds to support continued research and outreach. The show has grown through the drive and passion of it’s founder Sandy Kane, himself a Prostate Cancer survivor. Started in a dirt field with as few as 100 cars and 200 attendees the show has grown exponentially to become on of the largest car shows on Long Island and is dedicated to raising funds for Prostate Cancer prevention and research.

The 9th Annual show eclipsed the previous years’ records  of 650 cars and 300 free PSA tests.  The substantially higher numbers came at approximately 4,000 attendees, 800 cars on display and over 500 free PSA tests done by the volunteer medical staff of Winthrop University Hospital.  A preliminary donation of $20,000 was presented to the Urology Department and accepted by Dr. John Hass, Chief of the Division of Radiation Oncology.

The outstanding performance of the L.I. Cruizin for a Cure Car Show has resonated beyond Long Island.  This year Sandy Kane was presented with the national Lee Iacocca Foundation Award for promoting philanthropy in the automotive tradition at a special noon time ceremony.

2013 Gave Us Another Great Weather Day

For year eight Long Island Cruizin’ For A Cure returned to the Sears Automotive Center on Broadway in Hicksville with our one day Antique and Classic Collectibles Car event.

The night before the event we scrambled to set up as much as possible before the rain and wind took over. Overnight it cleared up and we finished setting up by the light of our car headlights early Sunday morning before we opened the entry gates.

Once again we lucked out on event day with spectacular weather …

Someone must be watching over us!

WE ALMOST RAN OUT OF SPACE WITH 638 (DOCUMENTED) EXHIBITOR CARS, AND HOSTED 2000 PAID WALK IN VISITORS PLUS THEIR KIDS.

OUR MOST IMPORTANT NUMBER WAS THE 306 FREE PSA TESTS PROVIDED TO MEN AT THE EVENT AND THE 28 ELEVATED LEVEL TEST RESULTS RETURNED – THE FIRST INDICATION OF THE POSSIBILITY OF PROSTATE CANCER!   WE SAVED THEIR LIVES!

We have been hard at work on Long Island Cruizin’ 2014, to be again held at the Sears Auto Center on Broadway in Hicksville, on Sunday September 14th.

For 2014 we are being honored by the Iacocca Foundation as one of the best cars shows in the United States.

Dee Jays Fonzie and ChaChi spun the oldies, played trivia and generally kept the visitors on their toes and will returning in 2014. Our KIDS FUN ZONE kept our younger visitors busy (expanded for 2014). Lest we forget Mom, we had a number of vendors selling jewelry and handbags. The event was a perfect day for the entire family!

The money raised was donated to Prostate Cancer research at Cold Spring Harbor Labs ($20,000) and Winthrop University Hospital ($10,000). In addition we offered free PSA testing at the event, provided by Winthrop University Hospital. We did 306 free Prostate Cancer PSA screening tests at the event and returned 28 potential cases of Prostate Cancer. The men (with an elevated PSA) have been contacted and are following-up with their physicians.

The Long Island Cruizin’ For A Cure volunteers truly thank Winthrop University Hospital and our lead sponsors – Allstate Insurance, Plycon Corporation, Huntington Mazda, Westbury Jeep, Grand Prix Jeep, Levittown Ford, Alure Home Improvements, Rallye Group, Robert Chevrolet, Fiore Motors, AAA New York and Parts Authority, as well as all of our vendors who supported us. We also want to thank all of the car exhibitors, the visitors who came out to the event and everyone else who was a part of making the day an overwhelming success.

See you on Sunday September 14th, 2014 at the Sears Auto Center in Hicksville.
